I spent my life from the age of 12 suffering with occasional migraines, trying gabapentin for a while. I didn’t like it much, nor did my parents as it made me nervous and anxious in school. During high school and college my migraines increased to at least once a week. I had a great Neurologist, and he did all the necessary testing, CT Scan, MRI multiple exams and I saw him every 6 months and he diagnosed my headaches as cluster migraines which were probably genetic. We tried various meds, none worked well and so I asked for a rescue drug.
When I asked for a rescue drug, I meant something that could take away the agony when my headaches would start despite following his medical plan. I was given some drug and had an unusual side effect of feeling like a weighted blanket was laying on me. It was terrifying.
I was at a friend’s house and he had some Cannabis, and I had a migraine. I complained, and he offered me a pipe and showed me how to inhale, something I had never done. I knew his medicine was from a dispensary as he was a patient, and so I took a little puff. He laughed and told me to inhale deeply one time for a total of two little puffs followed by a big hit which set off a fit of coughing. I had no idea cannabis was that rough! I was coughing and choking, and he gave me a big glass of water and told me to just wait and suddenly, I stopped everything because my headache was gone. Gone! I couldn’t believe it. He was pretty impressed too. It was gone and I wasn’t high, just comfortable and calm. Looking back it was good that I could only take two little puffs because two big ones might have hit me harder and I wouldn’t have tried it again.
I was sold! I got my medical card and started taking about 10mg of cannabis in an edible which also helps me sleep. I also got a pre-roll to keep so I can take two puffs if I’m suffering. I take THC dominant cannabis with some CBD and THCA included. My headaches have gotten farther and farther apart and now it’s very rare that I get one and definitely depends on the weather.
So, for those of you who have persistent migraines and have tried other things, try cannabis. If you haven’t started any prescribed meds and know your migraines are not due to any disease, ask your doctor if you can try cannabis FIRST! If you’ve had migraines forever, try cannabis….I did and it worked!
