On Monday, Florida legalized Charlotte’s Web, the high-CBD strain made famous by Dr. Sanjay Gupta. The strain has been shown to have near-miraculous results for children with severe epilepsy, and its lack of psychoactive effects makes it palatable to even anti-cannabis politicians.
While this looks like a “Godsend” on the surface, it is quite the opposite for families with loved ones suffering from cancer. There are children out there—along with elderly people and everyone in between—being forced to take pharmaceuticals that have horrific side affects.
“As a father and grandfather, you never want to see kids suffer,” stated after he signed two bills legalizing the strain. “The approval of Charlotte’s Web will ensure that children in Florida who suffer from seizures and other debilitating illnesses will have the medication needed to improve their quality of life.”
Clearly the Governor has not educated himself enough of the subject of medical cannabis. Why would the governor ignore the children who suffer from cancer? Why are we so afraid of a psychoactive affect? Most cancer patients simply ingest cannabis oil—we’re not encouraging kids to smoke pot. There are plenty of medications that these children and adults are on that are not only psychoactive but also physically damaging! We recommend that Governor Scott watch Dr. Christina Sanchez speak about her research in regards to THC and its healing attributes.
We applaud Florida for helping children with seizure disorders get access to this incredible medicine, but we must point out that the bills fall short. Charlotte’s Web is in high demand and has limited suppliers. But it is not the only high-CBD strain available; there are several other strains that are just as effective and don’t have a long wait list. Some other CBD options are Harlequin, Sour Tsunami, AC/DC and Cannatonic to name a few.
THC is also an important medicinal compound in treating many diseases—it has been proven to
Even Dr. Sanjay Gupta has come to realize that THC and CBD are both necessary medicinal compounds, telling Business Insider, “They really do work in concert with one another. … Just taking the CBD out and using it alone doesn’t appear to work as well as when it’s with all the other compounds that are probably playing some role.”
We at United Patients Group believe whole-heartedly that no children or adults should have to suffer, whatever their ailment may be. CBD is great for treating pain, inflammation, and nausea, and it can arrest the spread of cancer cells, but it needs to be combined with THC to kill many cancers.
This November, voters in Florida will have the opportunity to help their fellow citizens get full legal access to medicinal cannabis. The state’s seniors, who make up 23 percent of the population, would benefit immensely from strains that help with Alzheimer’s, arthritis, glaucoma, and especially cancer.
If you live in Florida, vote YES on Amendment 2 this November. If you know people who live in Florida, call them and tell them to vote YES! Let’s make sure all Floridians get access to the medicine they need.
