Muscular Dystrophy & Marijuana Information: Treat Muscular Dystrophy With Cannabis

Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is one of a group of 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal or voluntary muscles which control movement. The condition is caused by genetic mutations that interfere with the production of muscle proteins necessary to build and maintain healthy muscles.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common form of MD and primarily affects boys. It is caused by the absence of dystrophin, a protein involved in maintaining the integrity of muscle. Onset is between 3 and 5 years, and the disorder progresses rapidly. Most boys are unable to walk by age 12, and later need a respirator to breathe.

Signs and symptoms may include:

  • Frequent falls
  • Difficulty getting up from a lying or sitting position
  • Trouble running and jumping
  • Waddling gait
  • Walking on the toes
  • Large calf muscles
  • Muscle pain and stiffness
  • Learning disabilities
