Health and Wellness Resolutions for the New Year
Introduction
Health and wellness resolutions are important to make, but they’re even more important to keep. That’s why I’m sharing my top five health and wellness resolutions for the new year so that you can set your mind on taking better care of your body and mind.
Commit to eating more vegetables and fewer processed foods.
Eat more vegetables and fewer processed foods. Processed foods are often high in sodium, sugar and preservatives (all of which you want to avoid). They also tend to be high in calories but low in nutritional value. Vegetables on the other hand provide a good source of vitamins and minerals, making them an essential part of any healthy diet. Taking care of your body from the inside out is very important. Start with the gut! Vitamins, Supplements and even Probiotics are a great way to get on the path to health!
Get adequate sleep.
How much sleep do you get every night? Chances are, it’s not enough. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need at least 7 hours of sleep each night to maintain proper health; however, many people aren’t even getting even 6 hours. This is bad news because getting the right amount of sleep can improve your mood and mental health, reduce stress levels which in turn helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, boost memory function (especially important for those studying for exams), increase creativity by helping you think more clearly and solve problems more easily at work or home. In addition to these benefits on your body, if you’re not getting enough restorative shut-eye then chances are good that weight gain will be an issue as well—not only will lack of sleep make it harder for us eat less but also make us crave high calorie snacks thanks to increased hunger hormones like ghrelin which tells us when we need food!
So how do we get better rest without sacrificing productivity during waking hours? Here’s my best advice:
Take a yoga class. Or a cycling class or any kind of fitness class you’re curious about.
- Yoga is a great way to relax and get some exercise at the same time. It’s also helpful for managing stress, improving flexibility and balance, and getting a good night’s sleep.
- You can do yoga in the privacy of your home or in a studio. There are many types of yoga that focus on different things; try doing one that seems interesting to you!
Go for a walk every day.
- Make exercise a daily habit.
- Walking is a simple, affordable form of exercise that can be done anywhere at any time. It’s also one of the best ways to burn calories and lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and some cancers.
- Set aside time for walking every day—even if it’s just 15 minutes—so you get into the habit of doing it regularly. If you already have an exercise routine but want to add walking as well, try adding one or two days per week when you walk instead of running or biking or whatever else you normally do.
- Add variety by switching up routes (and speeds) so you’re not bored with each outing—and so your body doesn’t get used to doing the same thing over and over again! Try different types of terrain like sidewalks versus trails; curvy paths versus straightaways; wide streets versus narrow alleys…the list goes on!
Be grateful every day. Write down three things you’re grateful for before you go to bed each night.
Gratitude is a key component of mindfulness, and it also has the ability to improve your overall well-being. When you’re grateful, you feel more positive and optimistic about life. This can help you sleep better by reducing stress and anxiety, which are common sleep disruptors. Additionally, gratitude has been shown to make us more patient with others and ourselves, allowing us to make better decisions in life (like how much time we want to spend on our phones :) ).
Start something new, like learning to knit or playing tennis with friends.
The New Year is a great time to start something new. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn how to knit, or maybe your friend has been bugging you for years to try tennis with them. Whatever it is, make it a resolution this year!
The best part about New Year’s resolutions is that they’re not hard and fast rules: if the idea of learning how to knit doesn’t float your boat (or whatever), then don’t do it! Try something else instead.
Take time off from electronics every day — no phones, no tablets, no video games — and focus on something else instead, like a hobby or some quality time with the people you love.
Take time off from electronics every day — no phones, no tablets, no video games — and focus on something else instead, like a hobby or some quality time with the people you love.
This is especially important for younger people who spend hours each day on their phones or other devices. Smartphones are as addictive as cigarettes, but unlike smoking cigarettes, most people don’t realize how much damage they can do to their bodies by constantly staring at a screen. It’s imperative that we educate ourselves about the harmful effects of technology so that we can make healthy choices when it comes to our health and well-being in 2019!
Taking care of your body and mind is important, especially when you are young!
When you are young, your body and mind are still developing. It’s important to take care of yourself so that you can be healthy for the rest of your life.
If you haven’t been taking care of yourself well, now is a good time to start. If you’ve already taken good care of yourself, don’t stop! Small changes can make a big difference in how much energy and positive emotions we have every day. You’ll be able to do more things throughout the day than if you were tired or had to deal with physical pain caused by not being in shape or having poor eating habits. Making small changes will help keep you feeling better as time goes on too!
Conclusion
And that’s it! I hope these tips help you make a great start on your New Year’s health and wellness resolutions. Remember to be kind to yourself and make the changes one step at a time — they don’t have to be drastic or difficult, just small steps in the right direction. And remember: if at first you don’t succeed, try again! You’ll get there eventually with some patience from yourself and others around you who care about your well-being as much as I do :)
Wishing you a Happy and Healthy New Year!
