Stan and Barb Rutner are no strangers to cancer. The married couple, both in their 80s, have run into it before. Barb battled bouts with breast cancer—twice. And about 20 years ago, Stan, a retired dentist with a thriving mini storage business, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. “I just thought I had a cold, flu, type thing. That was it . . . I wasn’t thinking cancer at all,” Stan recalls.
Fortunately, after treating the lymphoma for about six months, it—like Barb’s successful battles with breast cancer—became a thing of the past. By 1989, it was a closed chapter. But in 2011, it came back.
Like before, it struck Stan in the lungs first. Manifesting as a persistent cough, a doctor later revealed cancerous nodes in the lungs that were the real culprits. “Yeah, [my doctor] was really diplomatic. He says, ‘You’re in deep shit.’ Or words to that effect,” Stan recalls. “Yeah, he didn’t sugar coat it at all,” Barb adds. As if that wasn’t enough, doctors later discovered that the cancer had metastasized to his brain.
Like before, the Rutners were able to successfully battle—and beat—Stan’s cancer. But this time, after going through chemotherapy and radiation, they wanted to find a natural medicine that would improve Stan’s quality of life and maybe even prolong it. Medical cannabis did all that and more, surpassing anything they could have hoped for. CULTURE spoke with Stan, Barb, their daughter Corinne and her husband John about this intense and life changing experience with cannabis.
Regarding the chemotherapy and radiation that Stan underwent in March and April of 2011 for the lung cancer, what were the downsides?
Barb: Nausea, fatigue, weight loss.
What tipped you off to the fact that Stan might have acquired brain cancer after you had already found the lung cancer?
Barb: His speech became labored and garbled. And when I called the doctor, she knew immediately what was going on . . . and then they did the scan.
While cancer is a very serious disease, both of your previous bouts with it provided you with some great perspective, correct?
Stan: While it was taken very seriously, there was also an element of “Here we go again.”
Barb: Yeah, I’ll interject something too. With both Stan and I, since we’ve been through cancer so much, cancer has become kind of a business with us. So, it’s sort of sometimes like business as usual. You know?
Stan: We’ve got another chore to do, or another wheelbarrow full of dirt to carry up. You know it was just a job to do and that was all we concentrated on.
The cancer and treatment took their toll on Stan, can you tell us how?
Barb: Short term memory loss . . .
Stan: Yeah, yeah. My handwriting is getting better but it was awful at that time, I mean it was illegible, totally.
Stan’s health and quality of life began to decline, even with treatment in full swing.
Barb: After that he was wiped out. He was very thin. So we finished radiation to his brain on June 25, and on July 13 he entered the hospital for the first time with radiation pneumonitis (inflammation of the lungs due to radiation therapy), so pneumonia. There were three hospital visits during that time, and on the third they kept him for a week and started him on oxygen 24/7. And then he went into palliative care.
Things got bad. At one point, Stan was given six months to live?
Barb: Yeah, yeah, I accepted it. He went on to hospice, I mean if you could’ve seen him at that time you would’ve understood. He entered hospice on August the 12th. [Generally] when you enter hospice they know you’re diagnosed with less than six months to live. But, Stan was given only weeks to live at that time.
Throughout it all, the Rutners tried everything to beat Stan’s cancer.
Barb: During the course of his radiation/chemotherapy treatment, [Stan] also had Reiki treatments and acupuncture. And he did attempt to do creative visualization but found that he wasn’t very good at it (Laughs). I had used it extensively when I was having breast cancer and it worked very well for me, but it wasn’t working for him. But he did quite a bit of alternative medicine.
With Stan wasting away coupled with the grimmest of life expectancies, Stan and Barb’s daughter Corinne and her husband John started thinking outside of the box. Hearing that cannabis was an effective treatment for patients suffering from the crushing effects of chemotherapy and the wasting away and pain that is common with cancer, John and Corinne decided to give it a shot.
Barb: Corinne and John were becoming interested in medicinal marijuana but we were concerned that Stan was wasting away. He had lost so much weight and so we were anxious to get his appetite improved and help him with the nausea. So Corinne and John suggested daytime cannabis capsules infused with coconut oil; they’re yellow capsules that he started taking. He started taking those in early November of 2011 and in the beginning, he took about a third of a capsule in the morning, and it was about a week or two later that he was able to give up the extra oxygen that he had had 24/7.
Was there ever a concern about using a plant that some view as non-traditional . . . or consider an outright illegal drug by the federal government?
Barb: [Addressing Stan] You weren’t skeptical, were you?
Stan: No hesitation at all. Here I’m dying and getting nothing to change the course of things and so this thing has a pretty good track record in—what do you call it—in a non-medical world, so hey let’s try it. Got nothing to lose.
About a week or two later, after trying the cannabis-based medicines, did anyone notice improvements?
Stan: Everything improved.
Barb: He started gaining weight.
Stan: Sleeping better.
Barb: Getting stronger.
Stan: Yeah!
Barb, you’ve told me before how stark and significant the changes were in Stan as a result of his use of medicinal cannabis.
Barb: At one point, he was using a walker and then gradually he was able to help with loading a pickup truck and getting things moved. Now he walks up stairs, he does exercise classes, he doesn’t seem to get out of breath, and he takes naps most afternoons. But his strength is so much better than it was. It’s remarkable.
Eventually, after several months, a brain scan came back negative. No cancer. Same for the lungs?
Barb: On January 27, 2013 we received the results of Stan’s brain MRI in an email from his oncologist, stating simply: “IMPRESSION: No evidence of recurrent disease.” The lung cancer that had metastasized to his brain in the summer of 2011 (and nearly taken his life) was GONE!
The doctor calls him a miracle man. We are deeply grateful to his “team” of doctors, friends and family, but we’ll always believe that cannabis turned the tide.
{Corinne and her husband John on Stan’s experience . . . }
Could you tell your father was getting worse?
Corinne: You know, I never saw it. He’s very healthy. Both my parents are young. My mom is 76 now, my dad is 79, but this was two years ago. February, my dad was diagnosed, but he looked great. 100 percent great, you would have never known, so when he told me it was a shock. I was surprised when he had a little bout with a cough, but it didn’t even seem to last very long. But he apparently took himself in and got a chest x-ray and they had said that they thought it was pneumonia, early stages, and when they cleared it up; they wanted to recheck him again because they saw some concerning spots.
Were you a medical cannabis patient at the time your father decided to turn to cannabis?
Corinne: I knew nothing about cannabis. I’ve always been one of the straight-laced people. So, if I didn’t have John, I have to say we would have never asked that question. We started my dad on a coconut oil infused capsule. We had heard you can freeze and cut them, so you don’t have to give the whole capsule. So you can actually cut those capsules and start out slow.
Looking back, are you convinced that cannabis works as an anti-cancer medicine?
Corinne: I’m 100 percent, no question. I believe that his brain tumor is gone because of the cannabis oil.
John: There is no doubt in my mind that cannabis pulled my father-in-law out of the wasting stages of cancer and enabled him to gain strength and in turn fight this horrible cell malfunction with success. While many would say that the chemo and radiation could have played apart, he would never have lived long enough to find out without cannabis oil.
I think it wonderful that you are publishing your journey to health by using cannabis oil. Happy that you are now cured. I think after reading and watching the CNN report and showing that 5 yr old girl who had 300 seizures a day was finally given a part of the plant not high in THC and it totally stopped her seizures for the next few days. She now rides a bike, feeds her self, and enjoys life finally with her twin sister who does not have her rare kind of epilepsy. Her seizures are now controlled by cannabis with low THC. Thank you for sharing your story.
I just pray for safe access. All my inquiries have been responded with threats and another rendition of reefer madness propaganda. Kansas has no patient rights.
Can you tell me where l can buy the oil from
thanks,

Hi Corrine,
I am so pleased to hear of your dads success with cannabis oil. I am a 46 year old mother and wife living in Hawaii. I was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010 and now it has spread to my sturnam and chest wall area. I would be so grateful if you could call me.
Good Morning Charlin, I would be more than happy to call you!Pleasesend your contact information to me at Corinne@unitedpatientsgroup.com
Convince Novales I visited my friend yesterday, he was mis diagnosed of TB last January, so he took medicines for TB for three months. To find out later that he had lung cancer and it had grown to stage 4 already. He had Radio therapy last Monday and yesterday he was hard of breathing and had hiccups that would not go. Where can I buy Cannabis oil? Can it be shipped here in the Philippines?
Unfortunately it is not legal to ship cannabis products across state lines, even if it is going to another legal state. Cannabis oil could defintiely help his lung cancer. I have attached my father’s story. He had stage 4 lung cancer and a brain tumor on the brain stem. he was given 2 weeks to live. Here we are almost 4 years later and he has clear scans. I have also attached an article about how to obtain cannabis in the philippines.

Do you think its possible that I can ask my relative from u.s to buy me some of that cannabis oil and bring here?
Elen,
It is illegal to transport cannabis products across state and international lines. People may do this but it is a significant risk.

I would love to know if anyone with Fibromyalgia has tried the oil and if it works. I have been dealing with this bs disease for only a few months but I’m at the point short of buying a gun. I know that sounds stupid but I’m tired of hurting all the time with no relief. I have taken up to 20 pills a day and nothing.
Hello Shawna, Yes, we know of many people (with Fibromyalgia) that report relief from cannabis treatment. I have attached a couple of links for you below.

Hey I don’t know if you’ll see this of even reply but my grandma is dying of stage four cancer. I KNOW cannabis cute but I can’t convince her to do it because of her views on it. It makes me sad how much ignorance there is about cannabis. How can I get her to stop and prove to her it truly cures when I can’t have her meet anybody personally or get it off the internet(she thinks the internet is filled with lies because her daughter is a doctor and apparently knows it all)?
Xienna,
I would be more than happy to talk to her or even Skype with her. This story is about my father so I can fill her in on every detail. Feel free to call our offices at 415-524-8099.

Would the oil work for stage 4 burkitts lymphoma?
Patty,
Cannabis oil aka FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) can help or treat most cancers. Worst case, patients are more comfortable, have less depression, maintain appetite and can avoid much of the pharmaceuticals. The CBD in cannabis arrests the spread of cancer and THC kills the cells. We are not doctors here at UPG but we have read some remarkable studies on this subject in addition to witnessing many remission stories via cannabis oil.

Congradulations on your dads success! i was wondering if the oil would work for an advanced stage of non hodgkins lymphoma like (burkitts)? My 23 year old brother has recently finnished intensive chemo and radiation treatments in may for burkitts lymphoma, and 3 months post treatment has just recently gotten sick again.. :( any help or input would be much appreciated.
Friend of mine, cured her non hodkins lymphoma with 42 apricot kernals per day within six weeks. Another chap using same treatment plus added 5000 mcg of selenium per day, reduced his neck tumour dramatically within weeks. Marihuana oil is very effective on some cancers, but it isn’t a cure-all. With some cancers, other treatments are necessary. I had bone marrow cancer and I used 60 grams orally of vitamin c (pharmaceutical quality), 5000 mcg of selenium and 5 grams of bi carb daily. After six weeks, all gone. My oncologist only offered me palliative care. I am pleased I didn’t accept his advice.
When I found out that I had cancer, I decided that I was going to make cancer the best thing that ever happened to me, not
the worst. At 39 years old I was diagnosed with stage IIIB breast cancer and had a double mastectomy. I’d been told the
cancer had spread to my lymph nodes and bloodstream, and I had a 49 percent survival rate. I was not about to accept those
odds! My husband, Michael, had lost his dad to colon cancer two years earlier and he was determined it wasn’t going to
happen to me.
Recovery does not happen in a day, a week or sometimes even a month. Listen to your body and your gut—and you will find the
care you need.
Hi Katema. My name is Gwen and I would like to know more about your journey with your cancer. I also have stage 3 breast cancer, which is estrogen. progesteron herceptin. Could you email me at gwenromo@msn. Or message me on face book Gwen Molina Marco Island Florida. Would love so much to talk with you. Thanks
Hi, I’m Barrett
I currently have stage 4 Glioblastoma brain cancer. They say no hope past 18 months. I won’t do radiation, I’ve done Chemo and that put me in the hospital after 3 months. I’ve gone through 2 brain surgeries and they say I need a 3rd one soon. but its spreading. Would cannabis oil work for me. I’m will to talk to someone or travel to get it if it works. I’m looking for some alternatives that are more natural then what the doctors say. Thanks for your time.
Hello Barrett,
Many have seen remarkable results with cannabis oil and Glioblastoma. We are hosting a Medical Cannabis Conference at Dominican University on November 1st. It is very nice to see all this great information about cbd oil .But we need a lot more research on the subject. In my onw personal experience cbd works very well for epileptic seizures. One of my best friends is currently using cbd oil and and it is working out great for him.
Thanks!
I found your site while reading the michiganmedicalmarijuana.org forum this evening. Thank you for all that you do, you are honest to goodness humanitarians. I have already shared your link with those I know who are most in need of the information you have worked so hard to provide.
I have one question, can you help me to better understand the protocol that you followed with your father? I understand that he started out with approximately a 3rd of a capsule, but, don’t know how much he was consuming before he fell back to a low maintenance dose.
Thank you for all of your efforts, you folks are to be commended for all of your hard work.
Hope your father continues to do well at this time.
John
Hello John,
Yes my father took 1/3 of a cannabis and coconut oil capsule around 10:30am and 1/2 grain of rice worth of FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) one hour before bed. This is all he did in order to be concidered cancer free 9 months later. Please keep in mind that edverybody’s body, disease, age, weight and frame of mind are different. This protocol can be very specific. It is not a one size fits all application.
I am happy that my father’s story has been so inspirational! We are doing our best to pay it forward. Dad is now 81 and is truly enjoying every day!
Thank you for your note. Letters like this make it all worth while.
All the best,
~Corinne (Stan’s daughter)

My husband was diagnosed with stage III squamous non small cell lung cancer in February 2013. The tumor size was 7.5cm x 5.7 cm. He has gone through 2 rounds of chemo and 33 radiation treatments. The size has changed and a lot smaller but his over all health has deteriorated. After his last PET 6 weeks ago, they now say it is incurable and has begun to grow. He made his own cannabis oil and has been using it everyday. He had a Ct today and we are anxious to get the results on Tuesday. He is tired most of the time but seems to be doing fine.
Hello Ruby,
I’m sorry to hear that your father is struggling. It is great that he is able to make his own oil. I’m sure your dad has a good understanding of what type of oil to take meaning, THC to CBD content and dosing. My guess is he will start feeling much better. In my fahter’s case her noticed a turn around within 24 hours. If you would like to chat, feel free to give me a call at my office. 415-524-8099.

After receiving the results of the CT for my husband the tumor had grown double in size. He had been taking cannabis oil for over 7 weeks before getting this latest scan. Is this ever normal or has it not been long enough. We were certainly discouraged to find it had not only grown but, doubled in size.
Hello Ruby,
Yes we have seen this with clients who have been taking and oil that is not correct for their particular cancer. The ratio is very important, ingesting TESTED oil is also very important in addition to some dietary changes. I live in Houston, Texas. I have a friend who has been fighting with lung cancer since 2010. He had gone through 20 times chemo and some radiation too. Now the tumor has spreaded to brain. Is there anyway that he can get cannabis oil while he stays in Houston? Or he has to fly to another state where it’s legal to purchase cannabis oil? Please email me at your convenience. Or let me know, what’s good time to call you for more information.
Thank you very much!
Can you please advise on how to dose the oil as my husband can not work up the dose to 1 ml. He gets high and can’t take more than 5 drops a day . He has been ingesting oil under the tongue.
Hello Anja,
We are not doctors here at UPG although we do have an ocology nurse available to you. Please understand that the heavy dosing techniques are shifting to a less is more approach.
My father only took a tiny-tiny drop under his tongue before bed. He never increased his dosage.

For someone who has a family history of cancer, can cannabis be used as a preventative?
Beth,
My fammily has a long history of Cancer. Research states that cancer is related to a depleated endocaannabinoid system. Taking a health and wellness oil should feed that system to help ward off cancers. Of course there are no guarantees as we are still waiting for clinical trials. There are wonderfully educated oil makers that make “health and wellness” oils. It is important to find someone who knows about specific formualtions in regard to YOUR health as cannabis oil is not a one size fits all medicine.
If you have specific questions, feel free to call our offices at 415-524-8099.

Hi. I’m going to be 54 this December and have been fighting breast cancer since I was 46. I’m again dealing with chemo and hoping to god it works. My cancer matastized to my spine 2 years ago we were able to treat it and was doing ok until late winter of 2015. Had my scans and now the cancer has spread to my pelvic, sternum, ovary and liver. Currently getting chemo taxol 3 weeks on one week off. I’ve been dealing with this for a long time and this time I scared. I live MA and we are just beginning to open dispensaries but no oils available. I also read an article that stated the oil to cause the cancer to spread. I was excited to try the oil because I want to be done with this and live. Now, I am so confused and feeling discourage. Does it work on estrogen driven breast cancer? How much does it cost? Thanks
Hello Barbara,
Cannabis oil works on most cancers including estrogen positive BC. The trick is getting the correct formulation. It is very important to speak with a medical professional to get an understanding as to what is specifically needed for your condition.
Best,
UPG
And how do I do that? I am getting treatment a Dana Faber but my doctor does not prescribed because of dosing issues. Any help would be appreciated. I notice you didn’t indicate the cost which leads me to think it is very expensive and probably out of my reach. Is that true?
Barbara,
No this treatment is not as expensive as some may tell you. This treatment is in the hundreds, not thousands. Do not buy anything off of the internet and do not pay thousand of dollars. Many physicians will sit in on a phone consultation with our oncology nurse in order to learn about doing and formulations. Not all conditions are treated the same so it is very important to have a consultation with a medical professional in the medical cannabis industry.
I have linked the consultation tab here for your convenience. Please feel free to call our offices if you have any further questions.
Best,
MaryAnn
I was diagnosed with stage 3 Estrogen/ Progest/ Herceptin postive breast cancer in 2013… I had chemo/ surgery/ radiation. Had 21 lymph nodes removed and six of the 21 had cancer. As of today 8-20-15 my cancer has not spread,,, but from all the research I’ve done, it’s not a matter of if it will return and spread BUT when. I do not want to go the chemo radiation route again. My Oncologist does not believe in any alternative treatments and if he allowed medical cannabis it would only be the kind that helps people relax and help with nausea, not the Cannabis Oil that you used with your father. I live in Florida and I have a son in Pablo Alto California… If I were to visit him, where would I go to get set up with these capsules and once I get them do I have to continue to stay in California or can I take them back with me to Florida? I will try and call you, but if you could please reply to this message I would so appreciate it. Thank you so much.
Hi there,
I have been reading your info pages and posts with great interest, I am myself a stage 3C PPC cancer survivor, who was diagnosed after 18 months of regularly visiting my GP here in UK. He told me I had IBS and must learn to live with it! So after being rushed into hospital with a suspected blocked bowel back in Nov 2012, I was told I had advanced ovarian cancer not IBS and it was almost always fatal!
I had chemo for 4 months then major surgery to remove all that was possible and a second surgery to remove my ceacum and reverse the stoma I woke up with after the first emergency surgery. Then 4 more months of chemo then 12 months on the drug Avastin. I am now 3 yrs post diagnosis feeling well and looking well, my point to all of this is that my daughters did a great deal of research regarding CBD and THC for cancer and we started with a tiny bit of 1:1 cannabis oil back in 2013 about half a grain of rice daily at night, during the day using CBD oil only as there are no physco effects with CBD.
I have never missed a dose and the night time dose is still only a grain of pudding rice size, I have remained well and side effect free from the heavy weekly chemo that I had. I still continue with my oil and totally believe in it’s amazing therapeutic effects for this dreadful disease. Keep up the pressure on the powers than hold back such a wonderful medicine from those in need, I applaud all those who risk legal issues in persuit of a cure for their illness, we all have a right to life, and a right to make our own choices regarding treatment. Good luck to all those who choose cannabis, because it works!!! B
A great testimony I must share to all cancer patients in the world. My husband was diagnosed with stage 4 primary liver cancer in March 2014, doctor told us there was not much to be done since the tumor was 7 inches covering his lower lobe and also had spread to his lymph nodes, We decided to go home and called hospice which gave us morphine for pain, Ed hated the morphine which made him vomit and also affected his mind. After one week at home we decided to do what we have done for many years, rely on ourselves. We were only in Hospital for 3 days with severe Pain, the cancer had blocked his bile duct, after that we choose a Naturalist doctor and have not had conventional treatments.
One day i came across the use of cannabis oil for treatment of cancer and i saw a post on how a cancer patient was cured with cannabis oil. After taking some oil per , Within a couple of weeks his pain and swollen stomach disappeared and with it came hope and a good quality of life.
We never saw an oncologist and only have done a blood test after the first diagnose CT scan. His tumor marker went from over
6000 to normal and he is feeling well. We don’t know how this is going to play out, but enjoy every day and give thanks to God. As i am writing this post, my husband is free from liver cancer and the doctor confirmed that the cancer is gone.
Thanks, Debra.
Hi Debra,
I was so happy to read your that your husband was cured of liver cancer after being treated with cannabis oil.
My younger brother in Perth, Australia has been diagnosed with Liver Cancer and has been given six months to live. We want to take him out of Australia to treat him with cannabis oil. I need some advice from you. Please drop me a line on june@hospitalityskills.me
Thank you,

This testimony may help anyone whose relation have Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder: My friend’s 28 years old son is always confused, incoherent and childish in behaviour, repeating everything said to him. After years of treatment, using numerous Western medicine (Clozapine, Geodon, Seroquel, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Abilify) without any improvement. I found a better medicine that work effectively in all cases of psychosis. The medicine is liquid and herbal made. It improve my son’s health and does have any negative effect, my son is now back to his work with beautiful kids. Do not be discourage, there is still hope. Do not buy the idea that Schizophrenia cannot be cure, it can be cure completely from your system.
This is so great am alive to testify the good work of hemp oil and its miracle healing.
In April 10th 2016 i was diagnosed of breast cancer and bone cancer when the doctor told me it was already too late for me, that i have only ten months on earth to live. I shared tears and all hope was gone thinking that i will just sleep and die, just like that.
My mom came to visit me in Serbia two months later and bought me some hemp oil product saying that it works well on cancer, ever since she told me about the benefits and encourage me to use the medication. I have been on treatment for the past 4 months now which was the required treatment plan for me.
Last week, I went to hospital to do my test and to God be the glory my cancer was not found there anymore. I have been cured with Rick Simpson hemp oil which my mother had bought for me.
My dad is 76 yr old Vietnam vet who presumably developed lung cancer from agent orange exposure, as he never smoked. He was just diagnosed 4 months ago, but it already has spread to his spine and brain. He began a raw vegan diet and went to a facility for a 6 week water fast. He also had surgery to remove a painful disc, but did not want chemo or radiation. He has always been very strong and fit, but now is rather thin. I researched cannabis oil and convinced him to try it. He is taking steroids and a low dose morphine for the swelling and pain, in addition to the cannabis oil. We are now up to the equivalent of 16 grains of rice (which I believe is about .5 gram) per day, gradually increasing to the goal of 1 gram per day. My concern is that he seems to sleep most of the time, is weak and does not have much of a appetite so seems to be getting thinner (or at least not gaining). We used an Indica heavy, high THC strain (OG Kush) and he is ingesting it in capsules. I would imagine the morphine may also contribute to the sleepiness.
Is this to be expected during treatment with this oil? He started it 2 weeks ago and it can take between 60 and 90 days to ingest the full 60 grams. I’m afraid he’ll be skin and bones by then. Does anyone have any experience with this protocol? Any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hello Vickie,
The 16 rice grain protocol is far too much for Lung cancer. This story is about my father. If we had given him the dosage you are utilizing, he would have slept through his hunger. New reports state that micro dosing is the norm today. My dad only took 1/2 of 1 grain of rice sized drop of Cannabis Oil.That is it, he never went up from there.
Who told you to give your father this and did they do a full medical intake? The fact that he is on Morphine is a huge reason to be directed by a medical professional. Cannabis increases the affect of morphine so your dad must be higher than a kite! Also, 16 rice grains of oil IS 1 gram.
